What Chinese people actually mean

The exact meaning depends on the situation and tone. It can reassure someone, answer an apology, or signal that the speaker does not want to talk about a problem.

Tone and formality

Often reassuring, but a short flat reply can also close the conversation.

Common in everyday speech; suitable in many ordinary polite exchanges.

Literal meaning

Literally, nothing is the matter.

When not to use it

Do not assume a brief 没事 proves the speaker is unhurt or has no concerns.

Common mistakes

  • A reply to an apology and a reply about one’s condition are related but not identical uses.

When to use it

✓Use 没事 after a minor apology or to say that you are okay. In a sentence such as 我今天没事 (wǒ jīntiān méi shì), it can instead mean you have nothing to do today.
✓To reassure someone checking on you, add a concrete detail: 没事,我没受伤 (méi shì, wǒ méi shòushāng), “I’m okay; I’m not hurt.”
✓If someone says 没事 after you apologize, you can acknowledge it and move on. You do not need to repeat the apology indefinitely.
✓A quiet or delayed 没事 can downplay a concern. If you are still worried, gently offer help: 需要帮忙就告诉我 (xūyào bāngmáng jiù gàosu wǒ), “Tell me if you need help.”
✓Compare 没关系 for accepting an apology and 没问题 for agreeing to a task. There is overlap, so follow the whole exchange.
