How to Say “Okay” in Chinese: 行, 可以, 行吧 and More

English “okay” can give permission, accept a plan, leave a choice open, or judge quality. Read the question first: what is the speaker asking you to decide?

Agreeing to a proposed time or plan.

行

Sure / That works.

A short spoken agreement. 可以 can also accept a plan, so both can be natural. Here 行 is pronounced xíng; the reading háng has other meanings.

Giving permission or saying something is possible.

可以

Yes, you may / That is possible.

In 我可以坐这儿吗？, the speaker asks permission to sit here. 可以，请坐 clearly grants it. 行 can also grant permission in casual speech; this is not an exclusive rule.

Accepting a suggestion with a softer or tentative reply.

行吧

All right then / Okay.

It can sound reluctant, especially after a pause, but a light 行吧 can be friendly. A text message alone does not prove that someone is annoyed.

Choosing between two or more acceptable options.

都行

Either is fine / Any of those works.

都 refers to the options being discussed. If only one plan has been offered, plain 行 or 可以 usually makes your agreement clearer.

Saying how good something is or how well it went.

还行

It’s okay / Not bad.

A moderate assessment, often milder than 很好. It can also describe how someone is doing or how workable an option is; it is not a universal yes to a request.

These expressions overlap. Learn the job each reply does in its sentence, rather than treating every English “okay” as the same Chinese word. When details matter, add a clear next step: 行，明天十点见 (Sure, see you at ten tomorrow).
